Paganism & Beyond : What About Jesus?

Here is a Special guest blog Post, from the awesome Joanna DeVoe
written by Joanna DeVoe (KiCKASS WiTCH : Putting The "K" In Magick

"Pagan". It's a pretty strong word. Used in today's technology-centric, progress-loving world, it's got a certain defiance to it, and, at the same time, to call one's self a Pagan seems like the most natural thing in the world. Paganism does predate Christianity, the dominant religion in the western world, by quite a few millennia.
Maybe that's why it seems so deliciously defiant? As a label, it says, "We're still here, people who want to stay connected to the Earth, people who will not sacrifice or suppress their natural, human inclinations in order to please a puritanical, fear-mongering church".
It's a reclamation of one's ancestral roots, signifying our innate connection with nature in a society that has all but denatured itself.
However, I would like to suggest that once the dust has settled on that initial rebellion, after the anger at having been "lied to" has subsided, a certain kind of acceptance, even love for one's childhood faith can begin to set in, igniting a whole other kind of return to one's roots. It's a return to the roots of one's more immediate ancestors, grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, and, for so many of us, that means a return to Jesus.
I'm not talking about a return to Christianity, although plenty of people walk a Christo-Pagan path and, despite the protests from the fundamentalist peanut gallery (yes- Pagans can be fundamentalists), it seems to work for them just fine.
What I'm speaking of is a return to the myth, the legend, maybe even the historical figure called "Jesus" through another lens, whatever lens you happen to be looking through right now.
Today, when I think of Jesus, I think of this kind of peace-loving hippie dude who was trying to teach people that we all have the same powers that he possessed, the ability to perform miracles, live from heart-center and consciously co-create our reality. I understand that to some this may seem like an irreverent, even disrespectful take on their Lord & Savior, but that's how I like my Jesus, and I really don't think he'd mind. I mean, this is a guy who supposedly hung out with prostitutes, lepers and thieves. Does it get any more irreverent than that?
You may not even be able to view Jesus as ever having been an actual person, but I still think that, if you're interested in tying in the culture of your youth with your current Pagan ideals, you might be able to embrace him as a symbol.
The Jesus story is rich in symbolism and Easter/Ostara (as well as Christmas/Yule) is the perfect time to incorporate some of that into your spirituality, bridging the gap that may still exist between you and your Christian family.
Examined from this angle, Easter can represent the resurrection of the "sun" of God after his long, wintery "death". If you're willing to stretch your imagination, the He Hath Risen tale can, like the Easter egg, symbolize rebirth and the born again Spring.
If, like me, you go back home every Easter to spend time with your family, isn't it better to find some common denominator rather than rolling your eyes and muttering under your breath about how Easter is just another holiday the Christians appropriated from the Pagans? We've probably all been there, perhaps rightfully so, but, at some point, it's nice to move to on.
And- this doesn't just apply to Pagans. For example: What do the following books have in common?
The Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective On The Teachings Of Jesus (by Dalai Lama, Robert Kiely, Geshe Thupten Jinpa and Laurence Freeman), The Yoga Of Jesus: Understanding The Hidden Teachings Of The Gospel (by Paramahansa Yogananda), and Jesus Through Pagan Eyes: Bridging Neopagan Perspectives With A Progressive Vision Of Christ (by Rev Mark Townsend)...
Jesus! Right? Everybody seems to want a piece of Jesus, and I believe that's partly due to what I'm talking about here, this deep human need that many of us feel to reconnect with our families, the families that, for better or worse, raised us, and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, making that kind of effort can be a beautiful gesture of love, and Spring is the perfect time to plant the seeds of a new perspective.

WTH MOM....... Really?

Let me start with saying I love my mom. I really do, but she is and always has been a very self centered and selfish person, if it's not always about her she makes it about her.

So today I had dental surgery to remove a bad tooth(it's roots had to be removed one at a time) I get home and I kid you not as soon as I closed my eyes to rest my sister in law calls saying "they're putting mom in the hospital, only one pocket in her lung is working". Of course I'm worried because my mom has COPD and only has about 45% lung usage as is, I call my step dad and tell him to call me after she has been admitted and he has talked to all the docs and has all the info. He says he will.............

In the mean time all of my family starts calling asking if I'm ok(over my mom) and to set up ways to get me to the hospital or visits(I don't drive) and all that good stuff, as is normal in our family. Then the phone rings and it's my mom " I know your worried about me but I'm not going to the hospital today" I was like excuse me the doctor says you need to be in the hospital, she says " well I don't want to I'm going to wait and see" mind you she is struggling for breath and coughing the whole time, but she wants to wait and see.

I just don't know what to do; cry, be angry and yell, or just give up. right now I'm just lost and needed to vent, thanks for listening to or I should say reading my vent.

New Handmade BOS

Thanks to my friend Renee's album reminded me how much I love Practical Magic, I decided to make a  new BOS based on the one from the movie, but with my own twist. So this is what I did and why.

I started with two binders (I went with binders because I like the option of taking stuff out or rearranging the pages when needed.) I then hot glued them together in a way they would open the way I wanted.

I then got a paper bag(I have some rather huge ones, they are like 3 feet deep) I cut it to the sizes I needed, then proceeded to mod podge the paper to the binders. as seen in the pic below.

When do it looks the way a school book would look if you where using a paper bag book cover.

after letting the glue/mod podge dry, I painted it a mixture of med brown and gold paint mixed, then added red tissue paper(also mod podged for protection) to the inside covers.

I then after letting all of that dry, I went over the outside with a watered down black to give it an aged look. I then let it all dry thoroughly.

After it had dried completely I added a triquetra to the center of the front page.

Today after I knew it was 100% dry I transferred everything from my old BOS to the new one.

I am very happy with the way this turned out, Have any of you ever attempted to make your own BOS in a similar way or would you ever try?

Hey guys I know I have not posted a lot here on the blog or on the Facebook page, I am having a bad health week all the way around, I have a tooth that literally broke in half and is now abscessed, it will be a few weeks before I can have it removed. The tooth issue is reeking havoc on my diabetes because eating is very difficult.

OK enough with what's wrong lets talk about whats coming up!!!

We will be having a guest blogger this month in honor of Ostara and I am really excited to have her join us, now I'm keeping who she is a secret for now but I may drop hints from time to time, I will tell you she will be guesting on  Friday March 29th.

Also I have been working on a few crafting idea's as well as perfecting my natural beauty care products, I'll post pics and recipes soon. I hope to be back on a whole lot more after this tooth issue is resolved, I will be on from time to time posting this and that.
